Review# 65
The debut album from Black Sabbath is a classic, the opening track to Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath and has one of the most amazing intros with the rain pouring and the bell tolling before the instruments kick into that amazing Doomy riff and Ozzy's voice creeps in... Those famous lines "What is this that stands before me? Figure in black that points at me..." such an amazing moment at the birth of Heavy Metal.
On the whole this album leans more towards the blues roots of the band with Black Sabbath and N.I.B probably being the heaviest tracks on the album. The biggest sore thumb for me is the cover of Crow song Evil Woman which the label insisted Sabbath do since it was originally recorded by an American band and American music meant sales in the British market. The album was released in America without the evil woman cover.
As well as the Blues sound there is also quite a bit of Doom, this gives it quite a nice feel and creates a nice eerie layer that works well and Ozzy's voice works really well with the music too.
