Godflesh – Pure

Review# 81

The album may be named Pure but the what's inside is certainly not. Released in 1992 this is still one of Godflesh's most celebrated album. This album, like many of their early albums, features only vocals, guitar and bass as performed by living people - Machines are credited for drums and samples. There really is something special about this album - it has such a bleak, mechanical, end of it all sound. Godflesh have taken musical influences from many different genres and musical styles including fellow Birmingham pioneers Black Sabbath and broken it down into this grimy sludgy apocalyptic sound that has labeled them pioneers in the early Industrial scene. They have also been influences on bands such as Danzig, Ministry, Metallica, Faith No More, Korn and Isis.
Usually I'm not a huge fan of drum machines but here I make an exception - they have added enough variance to the loop and the way that the guitars bass and vocals ride and weave over top just fit in perfect (dis)harmony. I think the low budget production really adds to the whole feel, it definitely shows that you don't need a huge budget to get across something so powerful.
