Frank Zappa - Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch

Of all the artists to be transformed by the 80’s the most tragic to me is Frank Zappa. While he put out some top notch stuff live a lot of his studio work is not very good at all. This album is kind of surprising in that context. Obviously Valley Girl is one of the only ‘hit’ songs he ever produced, but I Come From Nowhere is surprisingly listenable given a lot of this about it are designed to be annoying. Maybe I just like bad things.

The best track on the album is the track Drowning Witch. There’s a lot going on, and the live band is focussed. It’s also a good example of those ‘impossible to play’ guitar lines Steve Vai would have to play as part of his job in Zappa’s band.
