Review# 85
Katatonia, you either love them or hate them. I don't think I know anyone who has ever been all "yeah they are alright". To me Katatonia make beautiful sounding music that is deep and interesting, sad and dark but with passion... They put Sam to sleep. Maybe it's just that the music can only be appreciated by dark deep passionate people? I know that Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth rates them highly...
The music itself is a kind of Gothic Doom Prog sound, haunting and beautiful but within that I find a kind of power. There are some fantastic dynamics between the lighter moments and the heavier darker moments, this does feel more subtle than on Opeth's Ghost Reveries - sometimes almost delicate but then sometimes brutal.
