Review# 76
This is the first album by Finnish Folk/Black metal band Finntroll, the album centres around a concept of Rivfader the Shaman King of the trolls and the war against the tribe of christ and symbolises the conflict between Christians and Pagans in early medieval Scandinavia.
I have heard the name Finntroll pop up quite a bit over the last few years but had never really looked into them, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the album as a whole. There is a fantastic mix of Folk and Black metal with touches of Death, Doom etc to really give it a fantastic medieval feel. While Finntroll are Finnish the first vocalist, Katla, decided to sing in Swedish - partly because he was part of a Swedish speaking minority in Finland and partly because he thought it sounded more “trolly”. This is a tradition the band have kept through subsequent vocal changes.
The album is quite a lot of fun and has a fantastic mix of musical sounds and instruments to keep things interesting and I love the concept of the album too... Nothing better than a "Trolls unite against the Christians!" story on for an early Thursday morning train ride!
