Probot – Probot

Review# 72

Probot has got to be one the most amazing collaboration/super-group albums ever! Dave Grohl on drums (arguably where he should be) as well as most of the other instruments and a whole host of his childhood hero's like Cronos, Wino, Lemmy and King Diamond to name just a few. Dave wrote the songs without any thought to actually record the album with the people he had in mind when he wrote them but a few years later he was convinced to do it and started tracking people down.

Centuries Of Sin is an amazing start to the album - a slow build up before the amazing Cronos from Venom rips into it. Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly)will tear you a new one in Red War a song that easily fits with the Sepultura back catalogue and then the always popular Lemmy of Motörhead fame brings in the classic sound with Shake Your Blood - a song Lemmy wrote the lyrics for in 10min! Mike Dean of Corrosion Of Conformity has a short sweet (and by sweet I mean mildly aggressive) track, but Access Babylon is a killer regardless. Kurt Brechet of Dirty Rotten Imbeciles sings on Silent Spring, a brilliant track with some fantastic bass work in it. Cathedral/ex Napalm Death main man Lee Dorrian performs Ice Cold Man which is one of my favourite tracks even among an album where I love all of the songs! Wino of The Obsessed and Saint Vitus brings The Emerald Law and Celtic Frost's Tom G Warrior performs Big Sky - another favourite and is a really powerful song. Viovod front man Snake sings on Dictatorsaurus, Trouble's Eric Wagner performs My Tortured Soul before the mighty King Diamond of Mercyful Fate creeps in to sing Sweet Dreams, a wonderfully creepy song. Finally if you let that final track play out through the silence... Or you are clever enough to fast forward, you will find the secret track I Am The Warlock which is probably the best thing Jack Black (Tenacious D) has ever done. I once heard a complaint that this song should be a recognised track on the album but seriously while I agree it should not have been tacked to the end of a track (I hate when artists do that) and had it's own track number it should still be a secret track... I highly doubt Jack Black's music was a strong influence on a young Dave Grohl!
