Review# 64
Or the Black Album if you will. It's the bands best selling album to date and probably their most commercial album to date. But at least it's not shit like St Anger. To be fair I am not the biggest Metallica fan, so it has been a while since I have listened to this album, but I definitely respect their place in Metal and while they have had a dud or two, St Anger, they have paved the way and influenced so many bands that they deserve the position they hold.
So this is the turning point for the band, leaving a large part of their Thrash sound behind and moving to a more accessible and “mainstream” Heavy Metal sound. But there is no hiding that this is a proper Heavy Metal record and not a sell out for commercial success. There are themes here and that just don't cut it in the mainstream market, like The God That Failed for example. The album itself is immense though, the sounds and dynamics are fluid and impressive and add texture to the songs. The weaving of guitar, bass, drums and vocals are fantastic – The Unforgiven is a great example of that.
