Strapping Young Lad – Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing

Review# 301

Devin Townsend himself may dismiss this album, the debut SYL album, as just a collection of demos that have been remixed and that there are only two good songs on the whole thing. I enjoy giving this album a good thrashing from time to time. Its extreme and grimey with an interesting blend of death, thrash and industrial music. In hindsight this would have been a freakishly bizzare album to be released in 1995, that may in part be why only 143 copies were sold in the first six months. The production is rather crap, but then even Devin says that, I would love to hear the 1995 release to listen to the differences in the quality to the 2006 re-issue that I have. Even factoring in all of the above I do like the album, it is just so interesting and has some real catchy bits to it too.
