Bob Dylan - Infidels

In the late seventies Bob Dylan converted to Christianity and spent several years recording gospel music. The ironically titled Infidels is a return to secular music. It is one of those albums that, whilst being really good, could have been a lot more. Had Mark Knopfler not has to tour Europe at short notice the production would have been at least as good as the gospel records. Had Blind Willie McTell been put on the album instead of say, Man of Peace or Union Sundown...

This is still probably one of the most consistent Dylan records, ranking up there with Time Out Of Mind and Highway 61 Revisited. I prefer the first half to the second, although Neighbourhood Bully has a few bad lyrics in there. Jokerman, Sweetheart Like You (a tribute to the statue of liberty) and Licence to Kill present some of his best writing.

The production is still pretty good, and the old CD sounds fine, haven’t compared it to the remaster but I can’t imagine that being bad either. Again, no videos on YouTube because Dylan’s being a cock about his media being online.
