Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin are about the closest that anyone got to being ‘the new Beatles’. They came from humble roots, started off playing simple music and then got more complex and experimental. Of course in this case those later albums weren’t really all that great but there was still something of a personal chemistry that you can’t quite put your finger on.

To be honest, I prefer them as a blues band than as a more experimental outfit. I never got into Physical Graffiti much and took a long time to enjoy Houses of the Holy but this early stuff is incredible. Despite the obvious examples of sloppy live playing later in their career, Zepp was always more of a ‘live’ band in that they thrived in a spontaneous environment. Even on this record there are a couple of moments where a couple of edits reign them back into the conventions of record making.

Top track is Dazed and Confused. If a Tyrannosaurus could play bass (it couldn’t, it’s arms are too short) then I can imagine it would instinctively play something that sounds kind of like Dazed and Confused.
