Nightwish – Once

Review# 123

I don't really listen to Nightwish very often nowadays, as I said in the Wishmaster review I find the Tarja albums somewhat tarnished buy the whole public firing debacle. BUT in saying that I am thoroughly enjoying listening to Once right now; I have my iPod cranked and am really wishing that I was not on a train but somewhere that I could sing and dance along to my hearts content. It does have the feel of a guilty pleasure, it is so much nicer and prettier than my usual picks but maybe we all need something different from time to time. The fantasy element is a huge draw card for me and I think they have pulled off the sound and concept well. Once is a very large sounding album, it swells and builds and will carry you along in the flow of the music if you let it. The orchestral tracking adds a great depth to the songs but is well balanced with the rest of the band. Tarja's voice is amazing and as always impresses with her range and skill. It would have been great to see what Nightwish would have done next had Tarja not gone the way of the diva and if the band had not made the break so sudden and public but hey that's their call I guess. At least they finished with a fantastic and strong album.
