Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan

They don’t make albums like this anymore. This is an extinct album format. It’s mostly covers with two original songs and marks the end of the music publisher driven era of the music business and the shift towards the artist driven approach that was in full swing by 1965. It that way it feels kind of antiquated by modern measures. They’re basically all folk standards and it sounds kind of rough, even by the standards of a lo-fi 1962 album. There’s a good nervous energy to it and spontaneity which is usually more at home on a live album.

Only get the mono. The stereo is hard panned and this is a really awkward effect. The mono sounds like Bob is sitting in your room. I really like the album, more so than Freewheelin’ in fact, but it’s not where I’d recommend starting. By comparison it sounds like a demo or collection of studio outtakes. I just so happen to like studio outtakes a lot.
