I don’t know what Freewheelin’ means. This is generally considered the first ‘real’ Bob Dylan album. It’s the first one built mostly around original songs and cemented Dylan into the singer/songwriter mould that he epitomised before it even really took off.
As far as the whole album goes, I like the first half a GREAT deal and the second half doesn’t quite stack up personally. Masters of War is probably the great song from the early Dylan period comprising of the first four albums. It’s got a lot of those iconic folks songs, Blowing in the Wind, Hard Rain etc. But Masters of War takes the cake and whilst these are all timeless by definition there’s a lot more urgency to Masters.
The stereo mix is a lot better here, but I still edge towards the mono. It’s a lot closer though than it was for the first album thanks to the narrower mix. At the end of the day, these solo singer/solo instrument recordings need to sound like they’re coming from the same place.
