Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'

This is without a single doubt the best of the early folk albums Bob did. There’s an appropriate world-weariness to it and what’s more, he wrote it when he was the same age as I am now. Where does all of this come from? There is a completeness to the album missing from... well, basically all the Dylan albums except for Blood on the Tracks.

The downside? This album is incredibly depressive basically all the way through. It fits and presents a compelling tone but you need to be in the right mood to handle it. The only upbeat tracks are When the Ship Comes In and I guess One Too Many Mornings, and even then One Too Many Mornings would have been a sad track had it been on any of the other albums from this period.

As far as pressings go, the mono cd is the best. The original stereo apart from being kind of a crappy mix has some mastering issues that make it sound like it was recorded in different sessions. Just don’t go there. I haven’t heard the remaster but apparently that uses the mono version as well so should be pretty safe.
