Alexisonfire – Old Crows/Young Cardinals

Review# 43

This is the most mature album Alexisonfire have produced to date. There is a real coming of age which the band themselves have realised, they are now the Old Crows and they are aware they have grown up and changed as they state in the track Old Crows; “We are not the kids we used to be/ stop wishing for yesterday”. I quite like the feel of this album, you still get the energy from previous albums and there is a real sense of fun too, even in the serious tracks. Because the guys in Alexis all have different musical backgrounds you get a good variation of sounds and styles through this album; Sons Of Privilege is a heavier fast paced track, Burial is a slow sad dirge and The Northern is a rendition of the Methodist hymn Roll Jordan Roll which is believed to be the first song that inspired people to play the blues. The Northern is a tribute to their roots and is a very good track, there are a lot of different things going on with the vocals that adds a certain intensity to the song.

The interplay between vocals is something I really enjoy, especially on this album. It just adds something to the tracks with the layers of screaming and the clean, but almost shouted at times, singing and both lines are balanced nicely so that one vocal line does not detract from the other. Sometimes you can hear one of the vocal lines further back in the mix but more to beef up the other than to override.

Old Crows/Young Cardinals is a very good sunny day album, it is full of energy for most through most of the tracks and for the most part is vibrant and fun.
