Mortiis – The Grudge

Review# 36

This album is a very interesting piece of dark Industrial, Mortiis is a man who loves atmosphere and the feel of music. Through this album you get a taste of some “upbeat” tracks like Way To Wicked or Decadent And Desperate or the Electro-pop sound of title track The Grudge. There is also a certain haunting sound in the background of some of the songs that can occasionally come to the fore and then disappear again or just sit in the background adding another layer.

Mortiis has roots in Black Metal, being the original bassist for Emperor, but this does not really show through here at all. The album is dark yet poppy in a way, I personally like the clash of these two elements it feels well thought out and not too over the top. There is a sense of investment in the album which adds a nice quality.

I understand how a lot of people could not like this album, it is a bit out there and takes some risks experimenting with sounds. And I guess there are people out there who would be put off buying an album when the artist looks like a goblin too.
The albums ends with Asthma, which is a nice eerie instrumental but is a slightly jarring end to the album.
