Cult Of Luna – Salvation

Review#38

The album opens with the soft slow notes of Echoes, the sound is soft and slow with an almost dream like quality to it, this carries on until about 7min in when everything starts to change. The sound while not getting much faster in speed gets heavier rising into the climax of the song before again tailing off into a soft buzz. This is Cult Of Luna. You will get a journey in each song, COL are pioneers in the Sludge/Post-Metal scene and this their third album is the breakthrough to media attention. Songs flow through different textures of light and dark soft and heavy in a slow onward march. The shortest track on this album is White Cell at 5.40min, four of the tracks crack the 10min mark. This is a long album, clocking in at 1.2hrs and only consisting of 8 tracks. It is stately, almost regal in the way that a Victorian queen my look regal until you realise that her under clothes are full of piss. Not to say that this album is “pissy” but that the sound can change from “chin up, sound beautiful” then in kicks a fuckload of distorted guitar to shatter all of that.

I really like this album, especially more now than when I brought it 4 or 5 years ago. It is an album that really grows on you and that you need to pay attention to if you want to get the most out of it. And for those who like the traditional verse chorus verse chorus bridge pattern, well that's gone and in fact there often isn't a discernible chorus. But if you want to put in some time to get to grips with this album then it is worth it. Leave Me Here was my starting point and it was for that I brought the album, if you do the same thing don't worry if it takes you 4 or 5 years to really get into, it's just one of those things.
