Dimmu Borgir – Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

Review# 2
It starts with the sounds of strings, a melody that could easily be found in a classical era vampire film. For 2 and a half minutes you are lulled into this rather enchanting sound... then suddenly you are struck with extreme power of Blessings upon the throne of tyranny, you sit up straight and feel the awesome power of Dimmu Borgir.

Puritanical is the 6th studio album from the Black Metal tyrants and one of my first Black Metal albums. Dimmu are a band that focus on satanic themes but have such an epic spiralling soundscape which on this album is helped by their use of an orchestra. Overall the sound of this album is amazing and manages to take you on a rather horrific journey. Songs like Kings of the carnival creation manage to convey an image of a rather freaky merry-go-roud!

While there more recent albums Dimmu Borgir have released are definatly more accessible to those who are not familiar with Black Metal etc this is really worth a listen. It has epic tracks such as Hybrid Stigmata – The Apostasy and sludgy tracks like Puritania which has sat in my top 25 tracks on my ipod for the last 4 years. Not to mention that Shagrath’s vocals are just amazing, he can wail and then drop down to a creepy whisper in your ear... It’s just fucken rad!

I really have to admit I haven’t given this album a spin in its entirety for a wee while now but listening to it today (brought on by the kick arse cover spread they got on the Metal Hammer I picked up today) has just refreshed how awesome they are and has really put me into a great mood...yes satanic Black Metal does that!
