Fields Of The Nephilim – The Nephilim

Review# 3
Fields Of The Nephilim are a gothic rock band from the UK. The feel of their music has a dark and rusty sort of feel to it mainly, due to Carl McCoy’s gravelly voice, which suits well the occult themes of the music.

The album starts with the slow build of endomondia which becomes a wicked rocking tune to start the album off. In fact the first half of the album is much more rock orientated with lead single moonchild, the watchman etc and after Shiva which is a slinky semi instrumental with the only vocals whispered, the album takes a more sombre turn with the haunting yet fantastic celebrate. The album ends with Last exit for the lost which turns the last shreds of doominess into a frantic finale.
My main gripe is that the recording is relatively quiet, potentially due to it being an independent album released in 1988, which means it is often missed from playlists and as much as I would love to add various tracks they would just get swamped out. Overall the sound quality is very good with good sound on vox, guitar, bass and drums all coming through clearly.
All I can really say is this album is amazing, all of the songs are great and the subject matter makes you want to learn more about the occult. And if that isn’t enough they are gothic cowboys! Check it out!
