The thing about Jazz is there really isn’t a lot to say about the music so this one’s going to be quick. In many regards, this was more of a Miles Davis album than a Cannonball Adderley album. Miles composed the title track, selected most of the other material and played most of the material from the album live much more often than Adderley did. There is a certain inexplicit feel which is carried across to Kind of Blue as well.
The bonus track on many reissues, titled either Bangoon (correctly) or Alison’s Uncle (incorrectly) is probably my favourite track on the album as it’s the only one where Art Blakey’s distinctive drum sound is showcased.
The copyright on the album has expired, so there are an ever increasing number of reissues of the album across all sorts of low quality labels. The CD you want to get is the Analogue Productions one in terms of sound quality. Probably the one to avoid is the Rudy Van Gelder edition, which remixes the album to a stifled near mono mess.
