Review# 6
Yesterday I brought to you good people Strapping Young Lad’s Alien, so today I thought I would review Synchestra – a Devin Townsend Band album released not long after Alien. Devin released Alien in March 2005 and Synchestra was released in January 2006 and is meant to be the “alter ego” as such to Alien, "basically a record about coming back down to earth after being in space with Alien for a while" – Devin.
And it defiantly is a huge change in attitude when you listen to them back to back. While it still has a serious element to the song writing it is far more relaxed and takes on an ambient feel and a much more relaxed pace. There are influences of folk and polka in here too (such as Vampolka) and has a much more “pop” feel to it, although not as much as he would later explore with albums like Addicted.
There is yet another song about having babies (The Babysong), Vampolka is a fantastic into song to Vampira which is a completely rocking track and has a kick arse video to boot. Gaia and Pixillate are two other stand out tracks, admittedly I tend to find that the album tends to run together in one big flow so I often just let it flow without breaking it into particular songs. It is a great feel good album and you can’t really go wrong with songs like Sunshine and Happiness!
So, if you are game, get Alien and Synchestra and play them back to back... bang your head then chillax and get the full bipolar experience!
Peace out \mm/
